How Do I Filter My Friends Page?

I want to filter my Friends page so that all of my friends and most of my communities show up, but not ALL of them (communities, I mean).  It seems that the only default is communities only, which means I'd miss a lot of individual posts.  Thanks in advance!

1) Go to your Filter Friends Page (it's listed in the drop down for "Friends").

2) Scroll to the bottom and click on the link, "Edit Custom Friends Groups."

3) From there, you can create and name a new group and move people and communities into it.

The above comment explained what to do but I read somewhere that if you join a community where there are lots of posts that you don't want cluttering up your friends list, just make a new journal for the communities.

That's possible and sometimes useful (I'm Bedawyn's comm journal), but it has its own disadvantages (such as juggling multiple identities) and can be overkill unless you also have other reasons to keep your personal and fandom activities separate. It's best to try custom friends groups first and then go to another journal only if friends groups don't work for you. With only one journal, it's still easy to set specific comms so they don't show up in your default view using custom friends groups, and the groups give you a lot more flexibility that an extra journal on its own wouldn't. For instance, I have one link to click that takes me to all my House comms, another one-click to get to all my Torchwood comms, one click for the Buffy comms that I used to follow... to do all that without friends groups, you'd have to have a separate journal for each fandom.

You also don't have to "watch" communities that you join. Go to the community profile and just under the "leave" button will be the "modify watch" button. From there you can set it to a custom filter or un-watch it entirely. If you do the latter it won't show up on your friends page, but you're still a member and can see locked posts when you visit the community page itself. I do this with tons of larger communities I join so I can see locked posts but only want to occasionally read.

yeah, use your friends features to create custom filters

i've found that making a filter for personal friends, people whose journals i read, and communities works well with clearing up viewing clutter

and, of course, you can always take communities off your watch list, and then just check them as often as you would like to see if there are any updates you're interested in

or, if there are comms where people use tags reliably, you can track the community's entries based on the tags you're interested in

Thanks, everyone. It's just one comm that interests me but I don't want it filling up my friends page. But this will come in handy if I need to use it for more comms.
